Artists Statement

I began to paint in 1969 and it was through painting that I began to see the world. When I paint, I do not try to create an exact replica of what I see, whether it’s the green-and-brown hills outside my studio window or the hidden beauties of the Los Angeles River. Instead, I try to capture the form, the light and the atmosphere of my subjects, their intimacy and scale. I’m especially drawn to the stark contrast between the natural and the human worlds in Los Angeles, with its concrete and great blue herons.
